Mood disorders

Mood disorders, also known as affective disorders, are psychiatric conditions that cause significant changes in a person's emotional state. They can affect a person's energy levels, behavior, and ability to function. Some common mood disorders include:

  • Depression: A period of at least two weeks of feeling sad, hopeless, or uninterested in normal activities
  • Bipolar disorder: Alternating periods of depression and mania, or a higher mood
  • Dysthymia: A chronic, low-grade depressed or irritable mood that lasts for at least two years 

Other symptoms of mood disorders include:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Rapid speech or movement
  • Agitation or irritability
  • Risk-taking behavior
  • Insomnia or trouble sleeping
  • Loss of pleasure in most or all activities
  • Low self-esteem
